Hot Work is a multi-media, multi-speaker sound installation and performance intervention that explores the cultural, social and sonic legacies/phantoms of the British steel industry. It weaves warped, fractured and manipulated field recordings made underneath and around an ex-steelworks with fragmented archive video footage, electro-acoustic composition, sonic ghosts, interactive sound objects, voices, guitars, bodies, heads and hands to conjure up the din, fire and sparks of 'hot work'.
This album includes a special stereo mix of the installation soundscape composition and is complimented by Subterranean Sound Tunnel #1 - one of the soundscapes used in the similarly titled installation at MAGNA Science Adventure Centre in Rotherham. The interactive installation utilises three soundscape compositions which are ‘regenerated’ through the current sound-scape of the building (a re-purposed steelworks), re-sounded along an underground cable tunnel, and then emerge from a giant galvanized steel trumpet.
